The Orthodox Lawra Monastery in Potschajiw belongs to the most known and most cherrished monasteries and places of pilgrimage in the Ukraine. The lovely Orthodox monastery is second largest in the Ukraine after the Kievs's Monastery of Caves. Because of its design many visitors make this splendid ensemble of Baroque monastery buildings their travel destination. More: We will pick you up by car or minibus at your hotel. The drive will bring you to Potschajiw, some 135 kilometers from Lviv. From far you will be impressied by the architectural ensemble of the monastery with its golden turpits, rising up on a hill. We will visit the beautiful monastery, that is the second largest monastery of the Ukraine. From the beginning of the 13th century there had been a hermitage as at this place an appearance of Mary was said to have occured that since then had attracted many pilgrims. In 1833 the monastery was confered the name of honour "Lawra". The ensemble of buildings that you see today was erected from the 15th to the 19th century. A monk will lead you through the courtyard of the monastery with its many buildings. Main attraction is the Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary that was built by the architect J. Hofman in the second half of the 18th century. This church of enormous size has enough space for 6000 people. The cuppola that is 45 m high is impressive.You will see the icon of the Mother of God of Potschajiw dating from the 16th century is being worshipped. The cathedral was buildt on a soil terrasse. On a slope below the buildings ther are the cave chapels with the relics of the monastery's founder. On the grounds of the monastery there is also the bell tower, the Church of the Trinity, a refectorium and the building hosting the monk's cells may be visited.
