The productoin of salt as well as trade and transfer gave first impulses to the city, and in the second half of the 19th century oil mining became an important part of business. Before the Second World War the Jews formed the majority of the inhabitands; they accounted for 40 per cent of the population. Some 11 000 Jews were murdered in the ghetto. An impressive monument ("Wall of Mourning") today stands at a place where many were shot. Today, not muche reminds you of the vibrant Jewish life in the city, however, there is enough to visit and see. The city's beautiful market square is dominated by the city hall. Nearby, the Roman-Catholic Church that dates from the 15th century rises up to the sky. The facades to the east and west as well as the architecture of the interior still show the gothic style. Next to the church there is a fortification tower from the 13th century. Die most prominent shight of Drohobytsch are two beautiful wodden churches: the Church of Saint George (Sv. Jura) and the Church of the Assumption of the Coss. Both churches date fromt he end of the 15th century and belong to the most remarkable examples of Galician Renaissance architecture. Well worth seeing are the interiours of the church as which form some simple yet prominent and effectful architecure, with folcloristic painting and some iconostas. Only one of former seven synagogues reminds you of the Jews who once : it is the New Synagogue dating from 1865. Many famous personalities spent part of their lives in or near Drohobytsch. The most renowned among them certainly is Ivan Franko - a well known Ukrainian writer and fighter for independence. Bruno Schulz is some other prominent son of the city of Drohobytsch.
