Tour of the Easternmost City of the Habsburg Empire

It is a movement the end of which can not be seen and whose reason remains unknown." That is the way the most renowned son of the city of Brody - the writer Joseph Roth ("Radetzkymarsch", "Kapuzinergruft") describes the Galician towns where time seems to have been suspendend, and which Brody is a typical example of.

We will pick you up by car or minibus at your hotel. The drive will lead you from Brody, a city from the 12th century. Brody is locard 90 km northeast of Lviv. This city's hey days were at the time of the Habsburg monarchy. As the most eastern town of the so called Monarchy of the the Danube it enjoyed the rights of a free trace territory (1779-1880) what laid the foundation stone of the enormous riches of the city at those times. Then, Brody was the second largest city of Gallicia. For centuries, Jews were living in Brody; they w 70 per cent of its population. You will visit the ruins of the former Main Synagoge of the city.
Moreover, we will show you the vast Jewish cemetary at the edge of the town. During the Second World War the fascists murdered some 20 000 Jewish inhabitands in the ghetto of Brody. Today, there are only few Jews living in the city. Nonetheless you will still experience the atmosphere of the old Jewish Schtetl. Joseph Roth, born in 1894, is the best known son of the city. His house of birth no longer exists, however, we will visit the high school he attended. In case of interest you may opt to see a movie about J. Roth or meet pupils.of the school and its headmaster.
On our way back to Lviv we will make a side trip to the castle of Ollesso that is a prominent building the history of which can be trace to the 13th century. Jan Sobieski, who later became King of Poland, was born here in 1629. You may opt to have lunch in a restaurant.
After the tour of the castel we will bring you home to your hotel.
