This trip leads you to the town Shwokwa that is located 23 kilometers northeast of Lviv and boasts many sights dating from the 17th and 18the century. Embedded in a lovely landscape this town is a gem of the Renaissance. Morevover, you will visit a Greek-Catholic monastery in a beautiful forest in the terrotories of a national park. A trip that is recommended for revitalisation after strenous days in the city. More: We will pick you up by car or minibus at your hotel. Our drive first leads to the town of Sowkwa which is about 23 kilometers away. On occasion of the city tour you will get to know the most important sights of Showkwa. Our walk begins at the Main Market Square the houses of which form a beautyful renaissance ensemble. We will visit the tow most decorative pieces of town: the Cathedral of Saint Lawrence (1606) as well as the castle (1594-1606) and its ruins of old defensive constructions. Further sights on our walk: The City Hall (1926), the Zviryne Gate, a remains of the old defensive walls, the architectural ensemble of the monastery of the Dominicans (1653- 1655), the synagoge dating from the 17th century, the Monastery of the Basilians with the church of the feast of Christ rom the 17th century, the Church of the Holy Trinity - a lovely church made of wood dating from the early 18th century and last not least the Church of the Birth of Mary. At the end of our tour you may opt to dine in a restaurant. Then, we go on by car or minibus to the village of Krechiv which is some 12 kilometers further on the road. This drive will lead you through a beautiful nature reserve. In Krechiv we will visit the buildings of the Monastery of Vassilius. The caves cells of this monastery are well preserved, dating from the beginning 17th century. Years later, the Church of Saint NIcholas was built (1169), the monastery was fortified by walls and towers. Many renowned persons have visited the monastery in the course of Ukrainian history. During the reign of the Soviet communism the monastery was shut down. Only 1990 the monks returned. After extensive works of renovation the monastery now shines again and radiates its splendour. Well worth visiting is a lovely wooden church, too, that had been built in the Ukrainian folcloristic style. |
