The cemetary of Lytschkiv is one of the oldest graveyards in Europe, dating from 1567. Lviv's most prominent graveyard now is an open air museum and more than that: a "gallery of art work", showing graves of many renowned personalities of the ukrainian and polish culture and sciennces, like Iwan Franko, Solomija Kruschelnyzka, Volodymyr Ivasjuk, Markijan Schaschkevytsch, Gabriela Zapolska, Stefan Banach, Maria Konopnicka and many others.. More: The guided tour will show you the following: Our walk starts at the entrance of the cemetary that is located in vul Metschnikova, dating from the year 1875. and built in neogothic style, We will visit the burial monument of Goszczynsky (1801-1876) who is among the most eminent poets of Poland. The monument was created by the Lviv sculptor Julian Markowski. - Moreover, we will see the grave of the Krowczynski family which was created by the Armenian sculptor Tadeusz Baroncz (1849-1905). The statue of the Mother of God with child in her arms has been created by Julian Markowski. - The grave of Julius Konstanty Ordons (1810-1887 who was commander in chief when Warsaw was defended during the Polish struggle for independence in 1830/31. He was immortalized by the poet Adam Miciewicz in his poem "Reduta Oron". The grave was built by the of Julian Markowdki in the year 1896. The monument was buildt by Julian Markowdki and his pupils in the year 1896. - The family grave of the Zamoyska familiy was created by the sculptor Ludwik Tyrowicz. - Sigmund Gorgolewski (1845-1903) was a world famous architect and among other buildings was architect of the Wilhelm Bridge in Berlin, Gemäldegalerie Dresden, the Vienna State Opera, the Opera buildings in Odessa and Lviv. - Maria Konopnicka - world famous writer (1842-1910) and cofounder of the women's journal "Svit" - Dr. Stefan Banach, world famous Polish mathematician, laid the foundations of analysis of functions, wrote important contributions to the theory of functions of real nmbers, the theory of standardized linear spaces (Banach spaces) - Wladyslaw Belza, writer und publisher, author of "Catechism for Polish Cildren" - Gabriela Zapolska, wirter, publisher and actress (1859-1921) - The sarcophagus of Gabriela Zapolska was created according to drafts of Prof. Josef Gallzowski. |
