Discover the medieval Lviv. Take a closer look at the old city fortifications. See the old watch towers, walls of defense, weapons arsenals and cloister walls. More: Walk around the medieval city center: vul. Pidwalna street. with the gundpowder tower, the Arsenal with the Museum of Weapons - the only one in the Ukraine - the walls of the former monastery of the Bernhardins. In medieval times, the vul. Pidwalna ("Under the Walls) ran at the western side o the city's fortifications. The city fortification consisted in two walls, one higher, the other lower, an earth wall with bastions, 25 watch towers, two weapon arsenals and a ditch. Construction work went on for three centuries. At the end of the 18th century, the vul. Pidwalna street was built between the city wall and the earth wall. Here, most of the remnants of the medieval town and the old fortifications can be found. On a hill next to vul. Pidwalna there is a piece of medieveal construction work in a fully preserved state - the gun powder tower, constructed between 1554 and 1556. Its thick walls - some of them reach a width of almost 3 meters - let you guess how strongly the city was fortified at those times. In the vul. Pid Walna, moreover, there is the Arsenal. Erected in the year 1430 the Arsenal of the City has two towers, medieval wooden walk ways and was used as a stock house for weapons, then as a prison. Today, it houses the only museum for weapons in the Ukraine. The tour of the museum will let you see weapons and ammunition from all over the world and from different eras of history. After a short walk you will arrive at the Cloister of Bernardins that was built in the 15th century. The cloister is surrounded by defensive walls and bastions and once was part of the city fortifications. |
