Greek and Catholic church, Russian-Orthodox Church, Roman-Catholic Church, Armenian Church, Autocaphale Church. A multitude of religions reign the cathedrals and churches of Lviv - this tour tries to bring light to the religious plentitude. More: We will visit the four most known churches of the city - representating the four main christian religions: Cathedral of Saint George (Church of Unity), Latin Cathedral (Roman-Catholic Church), Armenian Cathedral (Armenian Church) and Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary (Ukrainian Autokephalic-Orthodox Church) The Cathedral of Saint George (1744 1769) apparently is the most beautiful Baroque building of Lviv. It was errected at the site of a house of god that itself dates from the 14th century. It is the main seat of the so callled Uniate church in Lviv. The Uniate Church (also known as Greek-Catholic Church) was founded in the 16th century to bridge the gap e between the orthodox and the catholic church. It became very popular in the western Ukraine and in some parts of Poland. Later it tried to reach the status of an Ukrainian national church. The Uniate church played an essential part in the Ukrainian independence movement. In the Sowiet Union the Uniate Church was declared illegal - the main reason for this being its involvement with the Germans during World War II - and was replaced by the orthodox church. Today, however, the tendency points to the opposite: the Orthodox church is being edged out and replaced by the Uniate Church. The Latin Cathedral (1360-1480) impresses by its strict, majestic shape. It is a harmonious fusion of Gothic and Baroque, but also shows elements of Renaissance, Roccoco, Classicism and Art Nouveau. The foundation stone for the cathedral was laid in 1349 by the Polish king Kazimir the Great. The Latin Cathedral is the main seat of the Roman-Catholic Church in Lviv. The Armenian Cathedral (1360-1370) was founded by the Armenians settling in Lviv in the 13th century. It unites Armenian-National and local cultural traditions. Opposite the cathedral the column with the sculpture of Saint Christophorus rises up and next to it, there is the Palace of the Armenian archbishop who is subordinated to the spiritual center of the church which is in Itschmeadsin (Armenia). The Cathedral of the Assumption of Mary (1581 -1629) with its bell tower that was named after its donor Kornjakt is one of the most beautiful buildings of Lviv. It is a fine example of Lviv's Renaissance architecture, and today is the seat of the Autokephalic (independent) Orthodox church, which is a faction of the Orthodox Church that does not subordinate itself to the Patriarch in Moscow. In Lviv, today, there is only one single church that subordinates itself to the Moscow patriarchy. |
