Discover Lviv how it used to be at the times of feudalism. We will ascend the castle hill (413 m above see level) to visit the former feudal residence. Enjoy the phenonmenal view of the old town of Lviv, that was enlisted as part of the cultural world heritage of the Unesco. At the foot of the castle hill the tour guide will introduce you to the most ancient churches of the city. More: Lviv has grown around the castle hill. On top of the hill, the Galician noblemen had their residence. At the foot of the hill , at the Old Ring Square (Staryi Rynok) the center of the feudal town came into being. The ascent to the castle hill and a tour through the oldest city quarter will make you familiar with this part of Lviv. The remnants of the castle walls that had been built under the reign of Danylo in the 13th century can still be seen. This castle played a predominant part during the fight against the tartars (13th to 15th century). The castle was destructed and reerected for several times. For centuries the castle could not be seized. For the first time in 1648 a besieging army was able to take hold of the castle: Bogdan Chmelnitzki's army of Cossaks made their assault a success. In 1704, Swedish troups under the command of Charles XII conquered and distroyed the castle. From the castle hill you will enjoy a phantastic panoramic view across the city of Lviv with its historic city core from the middle ages. The tour gide will lead you to Pidsamtsche ("Below the Castle"), that is also known as Cracovin Suburb. At the foot of the castle hill, the Staryi Rynok(Old Ring Square) used to be the centre of the feudal city. Here, the first churches of Lviv were erected. At the northern side of the square you will find the Curch of Saint Niklas. It was constructed as the court church of the Galician rulers and is a typical example of Bycantinian architecture of the 13th century. Quite close is the oldest church of the city - the church Saint John the Baptist, built in the 13th century. The church has a changing history. After the Second World War it was used as a warehouse. Today, it is home to the Historical Museum of the city. At Bogdana Chmelnitzkogo, you will find another church full of splendid artwork - the Paraskieva Church, dating from the 17th century. Our tour guide will pick you up at your hotel. Depending on the number of participants we go by car or minibus to ascend the castle hill; at the end of the tour we will bring you back to your hotel. |
