On our walk, the tour guide will lead you around the market square and show you the city hall and 44 patrician houses that date from very different times and show various construction styles (The Black House of Stones, Bandinelli Palace, Kornjakt House, Venetian House etc.)
Since the 15th century the city hall rises in the center of the square. Its present shape that is late classicistic dates from the years 1827 to 1835. The platform of the city hall's tower that is 65 meters high offers a phantastic view of the historical and modern Lviv.
The 44 patrician homes that surround the market form two main groups: the palacelike houses with broad facades and many windows and the narrow houses with only three windows. Predominant styles are Renaissance and Early Baroque, many houses have been erected on Gothic foundations, though.
The Bandinelli Palace has been erected in the style of the Italian Renaissance. Here, Robert Bandinelli, an Italian, opened the first post office in the 17th century. The black house that features sand stones that have darkened through the centuries is among Lviv's most beautiful architectural monuments. Its present rhombuslike shape dates from the years 1675 to 1679.
The magnificent Kornjakt 's tower impresses by its size that is enormous. It was built in 1580 for the Kornjakt family that came from Creta and used to be the richest family of Lviv. This beautful Renaissance building later belonged to the Carmelitans, then to a polish nobleman, then to a General Lieutenant. The polish King Jan III. Sobieski often stayed here, and the Polish-Russian Peace Treaty of 1686 was signed in this building. Today, it houses a department of the Historical Museum of Lviv. Of special interest is its inner court yard with its Italian flair and its double row of arcades.
The Venetian House at the southern side of the market square used to be a Gothic building that in the year 1589 was changed to Renaissance. It owes its name to an Italian ambassador who bought the house in the 17th century.
