While in Prague, be sure to also give the Chinese art of fighting a chance. Moonlight and shadow play an important role in the tradition of the Black Light Theater: Jirí Srnec, the founder and art director of theater, created a unique and acclaimed method of performance by deferring to the Chinese fighting tradition whereby warriors dress in black in order to essentially become invisible at night. At the beginning of the 1950s Srnec brought this concept onto stage: actors dressed in black are not seen by the audience against a black background and the objects that the actors are holding seem to move on their own. The various performances on the program create a mysterious fantastic world that enchant everyone ranging from old to young. |
