The city with its location in Lower Silesia has a history full of turmoils. Its strategic position at the crossroad of important trade routes leading from Leipzig to the Black See and from Venice to the Baltic Sea this city very early developed into an important trade centre, while various dynasties tried to get hold of her.
The colourful history of the city where such different personalities as Joseph von Eichendorff, Gerhart Hauptmann, Ferdinand Lasalle, Edith Stein and Norbert Elias went to school, is reflected in the outline and sights of the old centre of town. Gothic brick churches stand next to baroque palaces, buildings of strict prussian classicism stand next to monuments in stone of imposing Belle Epoque architecture. Among the reasons for the city's specific atmosphre is the fact that she is "completely torn". For centuries, Wroclaw was under German rule until after the end of the World War II a large part of its German population was driven out of the city. The inhabitants of the city of Lwow which is the capital of the Polish Ukraine today, were enticed to take their place and move from their home town that had been usurped in 1939 by the Sowjet Union and retained after the end of the war, to settle in the now largely depopulated city of Wroclaw. The city centre is set out like a chess board and was surrounded by fortifying buildings in earlier times where now is a park. This is not the only communal garden - Breslau counts amoung the greenest cities of Poland refering to its number of population. The city's special ambition is directed towards a program of cultural events that due to the initiative of many creative personalities and several private sponsors is very colourful and of outstanding quality. Whenever you visit the city - some festival, some music or art days or event is sure to take place at that moment. |
